Books for Baby, How to Choose!

Books for baby are an absolute must have baby thing. You want to start your baby’s love for reading right from the beginning. Exposing your little one to a wide array of books is one of the best things you can do for him/her.

As far as I am concerned, you can never have too many books for your kids. We have book shelves in each of our three kids rooms and one in the playroom. All are so packed full that we now have a pile sitting on the floor because we do not have anymore room for them.

The best books for your baby are going to be board books, cloth books, texture books and sound books. Stay away from books with paper pages until they are at least two or you will just have a bunch of ripped up books. When selecting books try to pick books with bold colors that show a lot of contrast. This is very good for stimulating your baby’s brain, black and white books are a good choice as well. Also, look for books that have real faces in them. Babies love to look at real people, especially other babies or young children. Pick books that have different sounds and textures so that your baby’s sense of hearing and sense touch can be stimulated as well. Make sure that you have a variety of types so that your baby can be exposed to different things.

Do not get frustrated or discouraged when you try to read to your baby and he/she rips the book out of your hand or tries to turn the page and does not let you go through the story. At this age, just looking at the book together and pointing to the pictures is really the most important part. Some great books for this age are books by DK publishing (they do lots of people and real objects), Dr. Suess board books (much shorter than the originals and great for little ones), and some of the classics like Good Night Moon. You will most likely find that your baby will start to have favorites. My husband and I could recite Dr. Suess’ ABC book in our sleep that is how often we had to read it to our oldest. Just make sure to look at books with your baby everyday if possible. Below you will find some of my favorites!
